Understanding lottery odds, prize shares and rollovers

Jackpot odds for common lottery formats, how much of sales is returned as prizes, and why a rollover does not improve the chance of a single ticket.

Three dice on a dark red background

In a number lottery you pick numbers from a fixed range and win a prize if they match numbers drawn at random. Jackpot odds are extremely long, and only part of the money spent on tickets is paid back as prizes. Formats and prices change over time, so check the current rules of any lottery.

Jackpot odds by format

  • Pick 6 of 49: 1 in 13,983,816 per line.
  • 5 of 50 plus 2 of 12 (the EuroMillions format): 1 in 139,838,160, which is 2,118,760 ways to pick five numbers times 66 ways to pick the two extras.
  • 5 of 69 plus 1 of 26 (the Powerball format): 1 in 292,201,338, which is 11,238,513 times 26.
  • Pick 3, exact order: 1 in 1,000.

Lower prizes are easier to reach. In pick 6 of 49, matching 3 numbers is about 1 in 56.7 and matching 2 about 1 in 7.6. The chance of any prize is about 1 in 13 in the EuroMillions format and about 1 in 24.9 in the Powerball format.

How much is paid back

Lotteries return a fixed share of sales as prizes and keep the rest for costs and public purposes. EuroMillions sets its prize fund at 50% of main draw sales. For US state lotteries, one published figure puts prizes at about 67% of sales in fiscal 2024, with a different share in each state. That is a much larger gap between spend and return than the edge on a casino table game, so a ticket's average return is below its price.

Fixed-prize games show this clearly. A pick-3 straight play has a 1 in 1,000 chance. At the commonly published payout of 500 for 1, the return is 50.00% and the edge 50.00%. A fair payout would be 1,000 for 1.

Rollovers and more tickets

If nobody matches all the numbers, the jackpot commonly rolls over to the next draw, and some lotteries cap it. A rollover makes the headline prize bigger but does not change the odds of a single ticket. A bigger jackpot usually draws more sales, so several tickets may share it. The average ticket remains a loss.

Every combination has the same chance of being drawn, so quick picks, birthdays and 1-2-3-4-5-6 are all equal, and a number that has not appeared for a while is not due. More lines raise the chance only in proportion: 100 lines of 6 of 49 give 100 chances in 13,983,816, which is still smaller than one in 100,000.

Be cautious of anyone selling a system, promising wins or asking a fee to release a prize. These are common scams.
